In a time of political extremism and worsening conditions for everyday life, it’s imperative we remember Freedom Fighters who have dedicated their lives to speaking out against injustice and organizing for liberation.
Organizations and community members are invited to pick a Freedom Fighter, select the “rights” and “responsibilities” message, and paint a portrait with supplied materials between June 19th & July 17th. Each Freedom Fighter portrait will be accompanied by the words “You have the right to...” (e.g. be free from violence) and “You have the responsibility to...” (e.g. learn history) based on their legacy. Submit a painting of a Freedom Fighter you find inspiring who has a message we can learn from today. The mural will be installed on the former Kozy Bar/Pastoret Terrace site fence in summer 2026.
Community painting sessions will be held June 20th 2-7pm at Juneteenth (Central Hillside Park) & June 26th 10am-3pm at First Street Growth (1st St & 2nd Ave E).
